Hey guys,
I was wondering if anyone here has swapped an m90 whiteblock tranny into a 960/s90. I see some of the 900 with bad transmissions and think that it would make a SUPERB daily driver.

Any comments?

PS i had no idea where to put this.

they came stock in some cars, so i imagine it'd be cake if you buy the whole schebang from someone in europe.

working out those types of details are tricky in the abstract, and usually there ends up being a problem somewhere.

what i'd do ... if i were to do this swap ... would be to first acquire the transmission, flywheel, clutch, driveshaft, xmembr, etc from someone on the other side of the pond.

then if it's a cable pull setup then i'd see if there was an 850 cable - pull pedalbox and if so - buy it?
never seen one myself though, so i dunno.

if it's hydro then do the same, i'd look to the 850 series for the pedals and such ... but maybe the donor car (that the trans comes from) has a pedal box to donate.

either way it's hard to work out those details without the stuff in front of you.
and yours would likely be one of the first around ... although there is a turbo 960 with m90 trans that was around a couple of years ago ... looking for the link ...
can't find it.

what do redblock m90 swappers use?

If its going into a 900/90 series then just get all the stuff you need from the donor car when you buy the box.

The clutch is hydralic and uses the same slave as 700/900.

Not sure on late 900/90 series what they do for clutch Master cylinder.

On my 740 turbo with T5 engine and whiteblock M90 swap, i was originally using the standard 740 clutch MC and slave but am now swapping to a internal Clutch MC from a 16v 740 to give me more space in the engine bay.

You can see my progress so far in projects and restoration

Being stupid (only a bad comment): get the M90 and install a T5 engine and you are done. Think, 960+T5+M90= tons of funny!. But seriously, IMO a manual 960/S90 should be great.

Some parts are interchangeable but not all of them. Exactly which parts are also a little fuzzy and no one has come up with a definite answer. Just assuming that you can swap whatever from an m56 probably isn't a good idea.

Indeed which is why i have a spare m90 on standby for mine, plus I kept the M56 from the t5 donor car so that I can attempt to rebuild a m90 should the need arise and give a definite answer.

does anyeone know how much refurb'd m90s are from volvo?

I know they don't sell the parts but they do sell them rebuilt.

This is not as in depth as you'd like, but according to Bilsport they are "inte s? dyr som man tror f?rutsatt att man har en stomme att l?mna i byte", which means that it's not as expensive as you'd think if you have one to leave as a core.
