Quick question on odometer repair

After 66k miles my odometer finally stopped working. I have the cluster out and new gear in hand. My problem is I removed the 4 screws on the white backing plate but I cannot remove it from the speedo. I want to replace the gear without removing the needle .Do the 2 small screws on the speedo have to come out anyway? I tried to pry the back off but stopped before I did something wrong. The car is an 89 240DL. What am I doing wrong?I checked D.B's page but says nothing about a stuck back plate. Thanks

Ok. After messing around I got it. But looks like I have a gear for an earlier cluster, bummer.

Step 2 here? The whole board comes out from the housing, then speedo comes out the front of the board. sounds like you got it...at least that far.

Yes, thank you. Now waiting on the part. Can't drive my van, waiting on a couple of pressure switches for the transmission. Hoping that solves the problem. Now this Volvo is parked waiting on a gear. So onto my Explorer to get me around. The other Volvos are on pause. Maybe it's time for a new car???? No.:-)
