This info might be useful for folks who have sloppy / vague gear selection issues with their older boxes.

Not so long ago, I bought a long top shifter cover for one of my M410s which didn't have one.

There was a small problem with it: The sintered bronze bush in the 'southern' part of the cover was somewhat chewed out.

There are two sintered bronze bushes in these covers. The 'northern' one, p/n 381164 aka [3] located where the red arrow points in the diagram, is still available, as is the O-ring [4] which sits inside it.

However, the 'southern' one (green arrow, and [2] in the diagram), isn't. Mother Volvo don't even list a part number for it.

As you can see, the bush [2] from my cover was a little bit worn....

In fact, it was so loose that the shaft [7] has so much play as to make the unit unusable. I ordered a 381164 (seen on right of pic, alongside the worn one) in the hope it would fit into the vacant hole in the cover. No such luck; the OD of the [3] bush is different to the worn-out [2] bush.

In a very pleasant phone chat I had with Planetman, he told me this problem with the rear bush is a very common problem, and how years ago, he and The Librarian had some custom bushes made to fix this issue.... but their stock of them were used up long ago. Damn.

So I exercised some Google-Fu, and found these:

SKF! Mother Volvo's parent company! (Grandma Volvo, even?)

These SKF PSMF 142020A51 sintered brass bushes are 14mm ID (same as the shifter shaft [7]) and 20mm OD - just perfect for bush hole in the rear part of the cover.

With the help of a G-clamp and freezing the little bugger before insertion, it fits very nicely in the cover.

Fixed!

Oh yeah - adding this just for completeness - after cross-referencing the 140. 1800, 164, and 240 parts books, I made a discovery: There are SIX different versions of long shift covers -
- one is a multi-piece affair (254226-4);
- one is a single piece with a 2-pin switch, no lock spring, and no dog (254573-9);
- one is a single piece with a dog, a log spring, and no switch (254707-3);
- one is a single piece with no dog, no clip spring, and a 3 pin switch (254723-0);
- then, there's 254769-3, the later single piece version - with a 3 pin switch, no dog, no lock spring, and no giant nut to retain the gear lever (the gear lever is held in place by a circlip)
- and lastly, there's another two-piece affair, 1208020-6, which was used on 240s with M40/M41 - with a 3 pin switch, no dog, no lock spring, and the gear lever is held in place by a circlip.

Who woulda thunk?

AFAIK, this SKF bush should be able to replace the part-numberless [2] bush in the single piece covers.

It might work on a 1208020 (where it's bushing [8] in Drawing 13838) since that cover also uses a 381605-5 shifter shaft like the earlier singe-piece covers, but I haven't tried it.

Im chasing the brass couplings (cups) that sit at the bottom of the gearstick in my M41 gearbox. I have one but the other one was missing, not sure how or why. Really hard to find.

What type (part number) is the shifter cover? The gear levers are slightly different. A couple of mine have two ball bearings in the very bottom of the shift lever where it slots into [7] (above pic) and doesn't have brass couplings.

Ill have a look on the cover in a few days for the number when the workshop opens again. But yes, as mentioned in the post above with the exploded view illustration, its #11

Yes, it's from a P1800 M41 gearbox, for some reason it was missing when the box was dismantled.
Im on a waiting list at Skandix. There is also the possibilty of 3d printing the part, as it's not really loadbearing or subject to a great amount of wear.
Thanks for your input bgpzfm142
