Since it's already been bumped, I'll add that I've started using 3M 8089 and it works well.

Doing mine with complete confidence now this weekend. Thanks so much for detailing this out. Glad I have a wagon, well for the headliner and in many more respects.
On a google search found someone on a jeep forum that brushed fiberglass resin all over his backer board and it made it sturdier. I'll try that depending on condition.

I did it in a landrover with two sunroofs using dap weldwood contact cement shot out of a $13 harbor freight paint gun. I got foam backed material at the fabric store. The only way I could have done better is if I had a friend to help me spread the material after I sprayed the glue.

After 4 years mines holding up great with the loctite headliner glue
