Someone left the gas cap off and then the rain came

Hello,
No, it wasn't me that left the gas cap off after fueling, and then comes up with a story that someone must have siphoned the tank and pitcched the gas cap. Anyway, The gas door is also busted off or I would probably just drive it and get a new cap. It rained hard all day and the little woman was out and drove about 5 miles with no gas cap on it And it sat for another few hours in a parking lot. Of course, it has about 15 gallons in the tank. I may pump some fuel some fuel into glass jars to see if there is any water in it. Not knowing exactly when the cap went missing, it could have sat all night and through the morning rain. Its been raining here a lot. She said that it ran great, no sputtering or stalling. I guess the reason for my post is to see if the general conscientious is to completely drain the tank, and change the filter, or just change the filter and get a new gas cap. I guess the test samples will answer my question. Thanks.

You might want to drain some fuel from the line that comes from the tank at the pump underneath the car.
Gas will float, water will sink. If there is any it will be the first fluid out of the tank at the bottom.

Any idea how much water could have gotten in? Teaspoons? Tablespoons? 1/4 cup? More??? I'd think it wouldn't be very much unless the body lines funnel the runoff towards the filler.

I'd do a test drive, maybe with some long curves to slosh the fuel around, and see if you notice any uneven running. If it's still running fine, just add a container of HEET to absorb/combine any remaining water.

The last time I got a huge load of water in my tank, it mixed in with the 10% ethanol and came out cloudy at first. As it sat, it separated. If it is only a small amount, a bottle of “dry gas” (ethanol) will work.

Thanks guys! I dumped a bottle of HEET in it and drove it.I have no idea how much water got in. So far so good. STP has a water remover that did very well on some youtube comparisons but, I tried all of my chain auto parts stores and wallyworld and all had it on their website but, none had it in stock. As for the guilty party that left the cap off during the monsoon rains we have had this spring, she (ye 'ol battleaxe) still maintains that someone must have tried to siphon the tank. Makes me wonder what else she is BSing me about!
