Stiffer suspension on a 940?

The UK, unfortunately.
Springs or shocks on my 945?

Whilst looking to stiffen the suspension, I?ve seen people saying that it?s not a good idea to get only shocks or only springs as it will cause damage and upset the handling more than stiffen the ride?

If I were to get either only shocks or only springs, which one would be better?

So, tell us what are you looking for? You can do all of the things you ask.
Classic Swede in the UK can probably help you out.

If you really want a sport suspension then coil overs are a great choice.

On my 945, I have 40mm lowering springs that got rid of the boat feeling and combined with the upgraded IPD 25/25 sway bars to actually get around corners in reasonable speed, it's a great ride.
Didn't change shocks when I put springs in, all good. Then again, 40mm isn't that much.

my 2 cents

I went with 60/40mm drop springs with stock like shocks kyb/monroe and r18 rims all at once, and yeah ride did change but not for the better  its stiffer but it rubs at the back at any corner and any speed over 60 km/h or 30mph , IMHO its still boaty and its still too high at the back for my liking, I will look at it after the winter, and change rear springs , maybe will add diffrent socondary springs for the rear and cut those, did not change anything else suspension - performance wise, stock sways just new bushings, new top mounts, adjustable panhard and all that jazz, full disclosure, its mine sunday driver / summer day cruzer to work and I do not want anything from the car, just to get my from A to B in a style I like :-D nonetheless did over 5k km this year on this set-up and it works, no issues.

It's more complicated than that. You can't deviate much in the damping rate or spring rate without increasing/decreasing both at the same time.

The shocks are valved to match the springs. They are a set more or less. You can go up/down on the spring rate a little bit and it'll be ok. Likewise with shock valving, but realy you are talking about a less than 10% change before you need to really match the shocks to the springs to have an ideal ride.

Popular springs sold by IPD and the like are typically sized to match stiffer shocks like the Bilstein HD's. Where as HD's are a little too stiff for the stock springs, they would match better with a stiffer spring like the IPD Lowering spring for example.

This is why Coilovers become economical really quickly. They can be tuned much easier and cheaper than buying sets of springs and shocks.
