I have a 1980 242 with a M46 transmission. Last year at the end of summer I had the overdrive stick on when the switch was turned off. I was careful not to use reverse when this would happen. Park the car for a couple of hours and overdrive was no longer engaged. Seeing as I was about to park the car for winter I waited until I had time to look into it. Over the winter I pulled the OD unit and threw a rebuild kit. When I dropped the filter and fluid everything looked just fine.
Summer is here again and the problem persists, I figured maybe the solenoid or relay was sticking when it would warm up. When I looked behind the glovebox for the relay it isn't there, PO must have rewired some stuff... Went for a casual drive the other day and just figured I wouldn't use OD to be safe, about halfway the the city it engaged all on its own? Pulled over and popped the fuse thinking I had accidentally engaged it somehow, flip the switch now and no light comes on but OD is still engaged. The next day it did it again on the way home, so this time I was able to reach the connections directly on the solenoid and pulled them in case I pulled the wrong fuse or something.
Both times it's engaged on it own I was in 4th going up hill. The second time I was paying attention and when I gave it some gas I felt the OD engage on it's own accord. OD stayed engaged the whole way home (60Km) with the wires disconnected, as usual let it sit a couple hours and OD is disengaged. Also of note the car does shudder a bit in first and second with the OD engaged.
Does this make sense to anyone?
I have a motor swap planned for next winter so I'm fine without using OD for the summer I just really don't want to get stranded with a destroyed transmission before that gets done.
