The 245 project that is not a project

Since I've sold the engine and trans out of this wagon, I guess its time to get started on the swap finally.

Trans has been cleaned up and new wiring harnesses installed as well. The 4th gear switch was bad. I ended up using a M47 reverse switch in its place. I had to run an additional ground wire to use this switch.

A final pic before diving in.

And how it sits for now. Still debating on painting under the hood while its all out. That will add a good bit of time to the project. The wagon will eventually get painted but it will be a ways down the road.

For a NON project...... that's some escalation indeed!
I second this lol
All of this because of an ugly piece of insulation on the firewall...

Now that there are 2 dead Volvos in my 2 bay shop I'm being forced to make forward progress on at least one of them.

Some sandblasting around the battery area to take care of some surface rust and a deep clean.

Nason epoxy primer topped with Summit Racing 2k primer.

Everything has been prepped for sealer, base and clear come Monday. Tuesday the suspension and engine/trans will go in and then starts the fun of figuring out where all of this stuff goes...

Progress continues. The Summit Racing clear laid down great. Not sure how it would hold up long term, but for the price I'm impressed.

Also talked the wife into giving me a hand to get the motor and trans in. I can highly recommend the Oberg Tilt-lift for engine installations. Check it out on Youtube. I stole the STS flywheel from the 242s parts stash along with a Luk clutch kit from Rockauto since the Sachs was backordered.

The Omni 406 matches the door jams great. I was a little take aback when I pulled the tape and saw the contrast. This one will get painted eventually, but the 242 project will get sprayed first.

I've spent more time working than taking progress pics. Things are finally coming together though. I will have to revisit a couple items that haven't worked out as well as I hoped mainly the intake and cold side piping.

I printed some pieces for mocking up the exhaust and they were well worth it.

I haven't updated this in a while but the wagon is somewhat on the road. Still have plenty of things to finish up and trouble shoot but I have put a few miles on it now. The interior still needs some reassembly, still no power steering or A/C, and 5th gear is having electrical issues but obviously wheels are the highest priority.

These are Bronco Sport wheels I picked up locally for cheap. 5x108 17x7 and a 38mm offset. A set of 25mm spacers with a center bore change from 65.1 to 63.4 and a set of soft Toyo Proxes in 205/45R17 if I recall. Not the best pic but it still hasn't been washed...

Really like the wheel choice. Typically not a fan of 17s but they look right at home. Are they steelies or alu?

Thanks. They're aluminum. Id prefer a 16" but these worked out well. I snagged them for $250 and had to do a light curb repair on one. Now I just need some vinyl moose antlers for the bronco caps.

The OD on the M46 refuses to engage. I've tried a couple different solenoids and jumped power direct to the solenoid. This trans had been off the road since 1991 so I'm guessing the orings are probably shot. I had another M46 that I finally made time to pickup and plucked the J type OD off of it. Some cleaning and a seal kit and its ready to be swapped. Pretty straight forward job as far as the rebuild goes.

What kind of spacers did you use? And how does the car feel with them on? As I'm planning on getting some Team Dynamics Pro Race LT wheels (17x7, 5x108, 45mm offset [I wanted 20, but they aren't able to do it to my knowledge, so spacers will have to do 😢] and wanted to make sure things were in place before doing so. My fenders are not rolled, as I'd like to keep it as stock looking as possible for later down the line. That does look fantastic by the way! Hope to hear from you soon. Cheers

What kind of spacers did you use? ...
Cheap hubcentric ones off of ebay on this car. No complaints with them. I do use blue loctite on the original studs and make sure to torque the lugs. I have ran a couple different brands without issue. The 7" wheel with 205 width tires works well. No rubbing and the fender lips are untouched.

Good to know. My tires are 225/45/17 in this instance, so I might not need the spacers. Have not got the rims yet, as I'm waiting for that sweet tax refund money to come in, but will as soon as it does.
