While sitting at a light I heard a slight noise under the car and noticed the shifter went slack. Sure enough the sound was the shift linkage falling free from one of its mounts. Fortunately the car was still in drive and made it home no problem.

My question for the class is this: What’s the diameter of the retaining pins/clips that keep the shift linkage in place?

I know they’re small as earlier this year I replaced the shift linkage bushings.

I can't tell you what size the pin is because it's not in the quick reference list catalog but the clip is. Because it fits in a groove in the pin it's smaller than the pin so it's probably 7 or 8mm.
The part number for the pin is 381705 and the clip is 951669. You could measure the pin on the other end of the linkage to be sure.

IPD says it's for the shift lnkage

FCP says it's for the throttle pulley

So you could pop the one off your throttle pulley (the spool), try not to lose it, and measure the shaft groove, or find another one that fits.

The clip is almost certainly what came loose. Thanks for the data.

Look's like a 6mm C-clip. I can probably find one at Menards.

I'll get under it tomorrow and see which end came loose. The rod is still there as I can hear is rattling around if I jiggle the shifter.

I have a E clip assortment I think the one I used was a 5/16" clip. If that helps.

Fixed. The rear linkage mount came loose. I found an appropriate keeper at Menards.
