240 Timing chain question(s)

Hello everyone

I've got a couple of questions,
I have a 1987 240GL,
its the 2.3ltr model
so today I was driving along and :wtf: BANG!!!! :wtf:
Car stopped

bloke from my auto club came and had a look, car hasn't broken the timing chain itself,
but rather a bolt there at the top where the chain is...under the cover "thing" at the top of the motor, on the front where the head is.

I don't know a lot about the mechanical side of cars,
but is this the type of timing chain that when it breaks it destorys and bends all the valves and rods and "things" inside the motor?

Just anxiously thinking about what it is all going to cost me to have fixed and if it has destroyed the motor.

As I said it hasn't broken the chain itself, just a bolt has snapped there at the top of the timing chain.

Any ideas on what will have to be replaced or is she dead?

:-(

thanks

Most Volvo "red-block" engines are non-interference. I know the common U.S. B230F is, and I think most other B230 variants are as well.

You can try turning the crank and cam- if things are pretty smooth then you're likely fine.

when the bloke came to look at it, the motor would still turn over ok but just make a high pitched sort of noise, only turned it over for a few seconds for him to hear it, but wasn't seized up or anything

so I could be ok?

Good news, the 4 cylinder motors don't have a chain:)

There is a rubber cogged belt which probably should be replaced because you have to remove it anyway.
The upper 'gear' has a pin aligning it to the camshaft which probably let go if DR Autoclub's diagnosis was correct. a new pin will set you back at least $1
probably not destroyed

Thanks for the link, so its a non-interference engine, that's really my main concern as I understand if the engine is destroyed, well the car is too.

thanks, that's put my mind at ease

:)

Just have to wait till Monday to hear back from the workshop about what its going to cost to put it back on the road again.

thanks for the help

Got my Volvo back and its fixed :) :)
so happy it wasn't ruined

:)

from reading the mechanics report it had a broken bolt and locator pin in the cam shaft
has had a new cam gear dowel
has a new cam balance shaft and crank seals
new rocker cover gasket
new timing belt
new accessory drive belts

seems to be running so much quieter now as well.

thanks for the help guys
