Transmission cooler

Hi,

When modifying a car with an AW71L, at which point does the stock transmission cooler in the radiator need upgrading? Liquid conducts heat away from an object faster than air, is a separate cooler mounted at the front necessary? Has anyone seen a difference in oil temp before and after a cooler install? Also what would be the better option putting the new cooler before or after the radiator cooler? Or blocking the radiator cooler altogether? Or what? Last question is it true that oil that is not hot enough is just as bad as too hot? If I used Mobil 1 atf and changed it every 6 months would I still need an aftermarket cooler installed for longest transmission life?

Thank you

I didn't catch what model you are refering to. My 760T (90) has both a rad. cooler then a little 10 or 11 coil radiator sandwiched between the intercooler and the engine radiator.

I have added a larger intercooler since the original purchase, and moved the tranny cooler to the front of the engine bay just behind the front bumper.

I may be wrong about this, but I believe the cooler the better when talking about tranny fluid temps. You are looking for a preservation of viscosity, and any heat sourcing may effect both fluid transfer and oil/ metal cooling.

I tow a fairly heavy boat and am probably going to add another larger tranny rad. (maybe another engine oil one too) in the comming months. I'm sure the demands I place on that 21 year old machine w/ 300K (mi) are more than the average DD wear and tear.

Sorry its a 940 which I am adding a turbo to. I will be using a stock 940 intercooler. So would the biggest trans cooler I can fit be satisfactory for my car? I plan to make lots of power mods to it and I would like the AW71L to hold up as much as possible.

Thanks

I would flare the lines if you plan on running rubber hose. you can get a flare tool from most parts houses. or, for a few trips to your local hydraulic warehouse, you can get all the fittings you need to match it up all pro looking.
As for the cooler, B&M makes a sweet one that is 8"x11"x1-1/2" that should be adequate. you can get em for like $80 I think. ran one on my buddies truck, and that trans stayed nice and cool.

That is a great cooler and B&M used to rate it as a 28,000 lb GVW. It a racing cooler that does not come with any hardware. That what i have on My SS wagon. Go a step down and the install kit is included with it and still 24,000 Lb GVW cooler. They May have changed the rating to btu, but this is the stake plate cooler that I like.

I just bought a transcooler from a 6.0L f series and it looks like it should fit in between the intercooler and condenser, where the factory intercooler sits. The only problem I think I will run into is adapting the fittings from -8 AN to -5 AN. I will let you know how it works out once I get some time to fab some mounts and put her in there.

I like it.

Can I just cut the connections on the metal cooler lines for the radiator and use rubber hose for the cooler? Do I have to get the ends flared or will a couple of clamps do the trick?

A couple clamps will do. just make sure you use the same diameter hose. Would prefer running new lines @ the same ID as the stock metal.
