Hi, I have this early volvo 240 cluster with electronic speedometer, it is stamped Yazaki during 1980. Im trying to find info on it and hopefully be able to use it. I think it could be either preseries work, or from 260?

I have tried to start it but get nothing on the dial. It

Any info is appreciated

I do not think its modified, rather modified in factory the rear cover is clearly not modified after and it is stamped yazaki. I also already know that anything before 86 "should" have mechanical. Hence my post, and why I want to know.

What also points to it being factory and not modded is the fact that it was still sealed and have only 1 km.

The very obvious melted plastic is very obvious to be glue when looking at it on my desk.. I have never in any of the volvos I've owned seen a cleaner cluster than this.

If you look closely at the terminals you can see that the +, - and G+ are moulded into the plastic.

Also I don't understand why someone who apparently modified this would both stamp in Made in Japan, add a Yazaki meter sticker and add ok date of 24th of April 1980. Plus they also added white chalk or something on one of the screws to see if it has been tampered with. So sure, it can be modified at home by someone, but I do really not think so.

The connections for the speedo are:
red/+ to switched +12v
black/- to ground and to one side of VR sensor in differential
blue/G+ to other side of VR sensor

The +12v and ground signals are already on the cluster (somewhere), so you might check if they've been wired in already under the speedo cover.

Might be special production for a police car, ambulance or taxi. The parts catalog makes no mention of an electronic speedo.

That's a really cool part!
I have an early dash in my 75 and would love to have an electronic speedometer that bolts right in. The car has an engine, trans, and rear end swap, so I have one speedometer sensor wire coming up out of the loom. This speedometer would make it possible to use the sensor wire without having to cut up the cluster and make something custom. It's just really neat to see, thanks for posting.

Well, that is basically my plan, since I also have engine, transmission and rear axle swap in my 75. Bought this badboy a few years ago and am trying to set it up to use maxxecu output.

Wow! I mean, surely this is an experimental yazaki factory unit. Nice find. There is no imp/km value printed on the gauge face though, so god knows with what tone ring and sensor does it work ok with.
I'm wondering though what did they experiment with this.
Did you ever crack open the cluster or got it to work?

Brownie originally had a yazaki cluster and it had the same exact needle and counter cutout design.

Maybe not fully fully bolt in as it needs some work, but check this if you haven't already: https://turbobricks.com/index.php?t...ster-electric-speedo-conversion-parts.351431/

My guess is special equipped taxi. Volvo had a taxi model with factory installed digital taximeter and Volvo wanted to have the road testing for 760 electric speedo? I actually had a B230F from freight company who delivered newspapers in Finland. They drove about 200 000 km in a year.
