Volvo or Bust: Adopting a '92 740 Turbo Wagon

So, the wagon has the same Cobra wheels? Hard to tell exactly from the cameo shot

I've not done a 700 heater core yet - how much of the dash has to come out?

2003 SVT Cobra replicas in 17x9, et+26 (25mm spacer gives effective et+1). That gives about a finger width gap between inner lip and strut tube.

The polished surface is a bit bold for me, but there weren't options. Maybe I'll consider changing the color of the wheels to a dark gray will tone it down.

Looks like I had some dead photo links. Scroll back to the last page, and you'll see the tear-down. It's not bad to access the box, but getting to all the little 7mm screws will take some patience and persistence.

Just center section. It all unbolts easily. Unbolt fuse box and move it out of the way. Remove the lower vent tray. Remove a/c tubing. That will give you access to the panel that holds the heater core. Not hard, just tedious work.

Nice work man, looks really good. I like the machined/polished set, prefer the flatter spoke design over the set on the lexus. For me, wish front sat in maybe and inch or so though, so was closer to flush, but I get working with wheel options

The polished look is growing on me. The design however, fits perfect for my taste. I'm sure a more conservative fitment would be more mature, but I still like that stretch & poke kind of look.

Not many options available for heater cores. The old, broken unit was brass, and stamped "Harrison". Is that OE or a replacement?

I opted for a full aluminum aftermarket, with cast tanks. I have greater confidence in it than the plastic tank & hose fitting optioned units from other makes.

Installation was opposite of removal, plus some cleaning along the way.

Interior can't really go back together until the carpets dry out. I flushed them with the hose. Good thing it was mostly Zyrex coolant flush & distilled water, and not actual coolant.

There was just a bit of tire contact at the bumper/wheel well lip, a couple seconds with the angle grinder for some subtle, but necessary clearance, on each side.

Another short-change on the oil. This time I'm moving to Mobil1 10w30 synthetic oil, and a Genuine Volvo filter. Flushed the transmission since reassembly, Toyota Dexron III ATF. Genuine Volvo Coolant and some distilled water.

New Bosch O2 Sensor, remanufactured Volvo Air Mass Meter, I think it's ready for a drive.

I need to do two of these on my cars. I have an OEM metal core to put in one of these days...
The $400 for a OE unit wasn't as discouraging as the potential months of waiting. In any case, I'm glad to have this one mostly behind me.

The leaking heater core stained the carpets, so I cleaned and reshot them with DupliColor interior black

Went to see if a clogged cat was the cause of my boost/misfire issues. It was another clue. I had a melty boi!

Throwback to before I got this car. These are the photos I was sent from 1,000+ miles away, when I decided to get it.

Hardly feels like the same Volvo

The past week has been a real test of my commitment to this project. A failed smog has turned into a seemingly endless hunt, one that has had me doubting my every effort. Today the problem seems to have been remedied by reinstalling my old Air Mass Meter, after a thorough cleaning. The new unit Volvo supplied is the hot film type and not compatible. My old unit eliminated my Check Engine Light, and cleared a idle issue & boost misfire.

I also reassembled the interior, catching me up from the heater core replacement.
