Hi guys. I’m working on restoring a Volvo penta for my boat. I did a lot of work on it this year, having acquired the boat in the Spring. I had a few great rides in the boat but the engine condition was definitely questionable.
I replaced the oil pan, rebuilt everything on the face including the freshwater cooling system and timing belt before all that.
The past few weeks I pulled it out again and started breaking it down.
My exhaust port on the head for cylinder 4 was all but eaten away, so I have the head with a machine shop to rebuild or replace.
I’m prepping to paint the block, have rings on the way, etc.
Looking for minor performance improvements I can do. I have a redline carb already. I’m still on a points ignition so looking to replace that too.
6 months until summer :)
I’ll post pics of I can figure that out.

I would just replace the points with a Pertronix. Check to see what cam you have. A single carb Penta used the A cam. You can use the V cam from a twin carb Penta engine for a bit more top end power. The other decent improvement you can get is to have the head flowed by the machine shop. You can get a good improvement with a flowed head. The cam designation is on the end of the cam that goes toward the back of the engine.
