Was gonna buy a truck, got a 1980 245 instead

Did you end up fixing your wiper issues? Biggest issue I found was that the grease in the motor goes bad and after cleaning/replacing the grease they work great

Second is bad ground at the motor
Well, I've fixed the part where it skips badly, that was gummed up grease in the pivot. Cracking open the motor is next.

In K-jet news. I got a digital tach/dwell meter to replace the definitely out of whack ancient NAPA one I have. Got the frequency valve duty cycle at spec. The hesitant start seemed to be the aux air valve.

New problem though, the steering rack started leaking. Not bad yet as far as I can tell.

After driving the car a lot and spending far too much time sorting out K-jet which involved going through each system individually I think I have it running well.

Primarily I've been chasing a slight high idle condition. Idles fine on startup, then when I first hit the throttle it would jump a bit high. Because I can't leave a running car alone if there is even a slight idiosyncrasy, I dove into K-jet diagnostics. Pressure test seemed to be ok. I hate working under this manifold with a passion. Getting my heathkit exhaust gas analyzer hooked up prior to the catalytic converter was tricky, so I used an AFR gauge setup in place of the stock O2 sensor to set base mixture 13.8:1 should correspond to 2% CO with the stock O2 sensor disconnected. I even went through the distributor after noticing the vacuum advance was quite sticky with 40 year old grease.

After all of this it is running quite nicely. The last tricky thing was a leaky fuel accumulator bleeding off pressure while the car sat for any length of time. Although driving in the mountains shows me just how much it lacks overall power. Dropping out of overdrive and even into third is sometimes needed to make it up hills on interstate 5. The solution is currently sitting in my garage, a 10.3:1 B23F from an automatic car obtained from Pat with all the needed bits to convert to LH 2.0. So right now I am just cleaning it up and replacing gaskets.

hey that engine looks familiar..... also there is a nice 88 245 at pick and pull moss landing with a nice harness and all the stuff is there

Well, the engine build definitely has taken some turns here. I'll dig up some photos to post a bit later. The short of it is this, took it apart due to the corrosion on the head (thermostat gasket surface was gone) and found some scoring on the thrust side of the #2 cylinder. At that point the thing came apart for a ball hone and rering. A spare head was obtained and sent to the machinist to fix corrosion in a different spot.

Fast forward a few months and I've had the engine apart while distracted by other things. Turns out in that time something nicked the #4 piston in the ring lands. So that is probably junk and I'll need to find a piston, or just bore it out given the weird surface on the #2 cylinder wall even after a ball hone. So that is now in limbo. Debating finding a new piston or saying screw it and bore it.

The car has been hauling crap to and fro for a while now and I finally got around to dealing with the noisy pilot bearing. I replaced the clutch and then noticed that it didn't want to go into second when cold and was kind of reluctant when warm unless I slotted it in just so.

I pulled out my spare (very early M46 from a 260) and that also needs work. So an M46 rebuild or two is coming.

Most of the scoring cleaned up on the walls of #2 with a ball hone, nothing catches a nail.

The #2 piston has a decent amount of scuffing but measured ok.

The nicks in #4 at the ring lands are what give me a problem.
Weird that engine had crazy low miles on it too for the age but it say since like 2007 iirc

Well, I've been tearing my hair out with this one for a bit now. Swapped the clutch as the pilot bearing was toast. Then it wouldn't go into 2nd on a downshift (which was always a problem but more apparent with new clutch parts). So the M46 came out and I put one I resealed and replaced the bearings on in. It is an earlier M46 though so it required some gasket making and the right shifter parts.

I borrowed some tools from HiPerfAuto and Planetman that have made the job easy.

Shifting is a bit stiff, but I'm blaming the brand new synchros and spring clips for being a bit tight. Also if you have one of these older style M46's, the OD switch on the box should use one of the 3 pole ones used on a late M41 for the reverse lights and seat belt buzzer. You just gotta play trial and error to find the right terminals to hook up. You can get it out with the gearbox in the car with a bent 7/8" box end wrench, but it isn't fun.

Now with that in I fixed my steering rack. I picked up one of the VP autoparts racks to replace my badly leaking CAM rack (leaked out all of its fluid just sitting while I worked on the 144). Now my PS pump is going, joy. And the AC is out, seems to have leaked out all the 134a.
