Which cam is the right cam (for me)

This is a V in my 940T. Install is stalled until Thursday. Waiting on another valve cover gasket. Once it’s back together I’ll post a video.

V cam is installed. Currently timed straight up. First observations, Idle vacuum went from 20 in/HG with the T to 14 in/HG with the V. Idle cleaned up after a few minutes of LH chewing on it. The wide band confirmed idle AFRs were perfect. Idle quality was pretty good. Very slightly rougher than the T. However, this 940 has always idled a tad rougher than others I’ve owned. Exhaust note is a tad louder with the V. It’s enough of a different to get me to install a second resonator or perhaps a larger main muffler.

I didn’t have time for in depth testing this evening but I did make a couple 3/4 power passes up and down the road. The power band is very different than the T. The engine really responds well to higher rpm’s.

I’m out of town over the weekend. I’ll have full power feedback Monday.
 
My auto doesn't let me go above 4k ngl. Even if I floor it, it always shifts at or just barely past 4
Ok yes you are well served with something like the T. But I still think something like a V is worth a try as the only really hot cams Volvo made for us users was the K and the H. All the other stuff is fairly mild.
 
Review, V Cam.

I like it. Much power, vroom vroom, get yourself one.

Power band is nice and wide. It pulls strong all the way to the shift points on the AW71 (5500 to 5700 rpm depending on the gear). It's got more mid band power than I was expecting but less than the T obviously. It really comes alive at about 4k rpm. I'm running mine at 4 deg (crank degrees) advanced. This was suggested by the seller as the sweet spot. Overall I'm happy. It drives nicely even with an automatic. You will need to get a custom tune. LH did ok in closed loop but open loop was all over the place. I've been doing the sneaker net tuning method and have gotten the map in the ball park.

We dyno'd them back to back, within an hour of each other. The K made 1 more hp and the H, 1 more lb-ft. 10.9:1, modified head and exhaust, LH2.4 with a tune.

Get something more modern from any of the cam suppliers like ENEM, AGAP, KL Racing, or such. The price won't be much different at this point.

I ran it on a MS b230f, 2.4mm milled head, 43cc chambers, lightly ported 530.

Gave +- 150 hp with good bottom end torque.
Passed emissions testing.
Very good idle manners.

Drove way better than a normal 230f.
These cams need compression to function well.

For turbo use, I could see it working with a big hotside/turbine and good exhaust/manifold.
Have not tried it, but there are good alternatives with 112-114 degree lsa, which I would try sooner than a H.
 
More notes. Timing map will need to be changed. In my car the V wants to knock right at 4K. In my experience the T knocked most around 3K. I can always hear the knock start before the EZK reacts. I do not trust the EZK knock function to protect a red block thats had the wick turned up.

I massaged the timing map this afternoon and burned another chip. I’m going to test it this evening. I will post my map once I’m happy with it.
