MikeJr. 65 122s project

Been doing some Mountain Meet prep this month to get this thing ready. Finally stage zero'ed the suspension, steering, and sorted out the brake issue. New rubber bushings all around, new steering rods, rod ends, ball joints, front brake rotors, new rear rubber brake line, front wheel bearings, and tightened up the steering box. Also adjusted the valves with help from my Dad, balanced the SUs, adjusted the mixture, cleaned and oiled the K&N filters, and replaced the alternator. I greased up everything that had a grease fitting, and topped off all the fluids, and also did an oil change.

Doing all this has transformed the car. It's amazing how much better it handles, and stops. I'm literally going to have to re-learn how to the drive the car. I wish I had done all this right when I bought it.

List of things still needed before the meet:
1.Try to sort out pinion angle. I was hoping the new rear bushings would help with this, but since the car's been lowered it has a bad pinion vibration in 1st from a dead stop. There is no adjustability in the rear so I'm going to check it and see if maybe I can shim the transmission mount down a little.
2.Alignment
3.New fuel filter and redo the line to the carbs. I don't like the way its run, and I'm afraid it will rub a hole in the line.
4.New lug nuts. The old ones are trash
5.Top off the oil in the SUs
6.Install new foot high beam switch for the headlamps
7. Reinstall choke cables.
8. Don't know if I'll have time for this one or not, but I bought new seat strapping for the drivers seat. This may or may not happen before the meet.
9. A good cleaning

The new seat straps really help. If you run low on time you can probably do the bottom in the car, just unbutton the cushion.

That said I never could get my seat backs to be comfortable, I always felt wires in my back under acceleration.

I’ll do that though I think most of the problem is the cushions are to far gone, but if I can get some support back it’ll be worth it.

I got mine to be rather comfortable, but it involved kind of overstuffing the seats. For the bottom cushion I just made it one piece instead of the normal two.

I just got done re building my 123GT seats a few months ago and man I didn't realize how bad they had gotten. Night and day difference! Especially since I use the car pretty regularly now for a 40 mile round trip commute. Highly recommend!

I really want to start focusing on the interior. Rebuild seats, add carpet, radio, a/c. I've been running the stripped down version of this car for to long.

Adding the sound deadening and modern carpet padding was a revelation, paired with the overdrive long distance driving on the freeway is a dream!

I enjoy my portable bluetooth radio unless you're really into wiring up a standard system. It just makes things so much more simple and the stuff that's out there sounds pretty dang good with crazy long battery life.

I'm not in a particularly hot climate/high humidity area though we do get a month or so of temps that hover in the high 90s. Adding A/C, be it even factory A/C never had a draw for me, mainly because the systems I've experienced seemed pretty weak for all the work involved.

I want to find one of the original radio block off plates and run a hidden head unit with blue tooth. I want to hide some speakers in the kick plate area, and in the package tray. I want it to look like it doesn't have a radio, even do an antenna delete.

A/C is a must in Atlanta... It gets hotter than Satan's a**hole around here. I don't even drive the car much in the summer months because its too hot and I'm getting too old. I want to just get an under dash unit from vintage air. I already have a bracket to use a Sanden style compressor on a b18/20 instead of the giant York. I'd like to find an original dealer under dash unit in good shape, and cobble that together with newer stuff like lines and compressor, but I may just use new off the shelf vintage air under dash. Some of them look pretty good.

I just want to make the car more comfortable over all and I really don't think it will take much to get it there. Also plan to install the rebuilt B20 I have on the stand, and fuel inject it. I've also been kicking around the idea of a stockish B230 8v turbo with an automatic. I thought it might be cool since the car was originally an automatic car to return back to an auto, but with a little extra hp. I change my mind day to day so who knows. The older I get the less I like manual transmissions.

Adding to the last minute prep before Mountain Meet I decided to add some fresh air to see it I can get this thing triple digit hp. Pops picked me up a SU airbox off of a 140 from Voluparts here in Atlanta. The 140 SUs have a different bolt pattern for the filters, so the holes don't line up. I used 3M 04240 Semi Rigid Plastic Repair to fill them up. Once filled I sanded the area flat and re-drilled the holes to match the 122 SUs

Fits pretty good. I just need to get a intake hose. The 140 hose was too short.

I got some better ducting and mated the 140 original intake tube to it. Still need to get a few hose clamps, but it should work.

I also installed a wide band in order to see what was going on with the AFRs. I'm glad I did because at WOT it was pig rich, dipping down into the low 10s. Got it somewhat dialed into the 12 range now and it feels much better. Plus the wideband is there now for future FI or swaps

I sold the Porsche I just bought back in May, but before I did I swapped the horns out with the 122 horns. I really like the way the Porsche horns sound, and they're pretty pricey even used. So somewhere out there is a Porsche 912 with Amazon horns on it :-P. I just have to clean them up, build a mount bracket, and install them.

Took the car to Mountain Meet, and I was very happy with how it did. It handled way better than I expected it would. I managed to keep up in the twisties, but people left me on the uphill straights. Needs more power! I have some crappy upright phone videos I'll upload later. Here are a few pictures from the meet

Only had a couple of issues. One was the collector gasket and intake/exhaust gasket were leaking. I managed to find both on the way up there, but I only ended up replacing the collector gasket. Big thanks to KwikBrik245 for giving me a better collector gasket than the one I found on the way up, and thanks to Towery for the smaller 3/8 ratchet loaner. I was trying to replace it with a 1/2 drive ratchet and it was slow going.

Huge apology,(and thanks for being such a cool dude) goes out to Andrew Nance for what I did to his 122, with my 122

The profanities in the video don't come close to how bad I felt, then I got to spent the rest of the cruise staring at what I'd done. Both are an easy fix for me, but I still felt awful. I'll post up photos of the damage to my car later when I'm less disgusted with myself.

Doh!

Cool build and I'm not on here often, but decided to look in the FS section and saw this car. I never saw mention of you pulling the Jenvey setup out for the SUs, what happened there? It sounds like you got the SUs working properly though, are they different than the initial ones you couldn't get to run right?

I never installed the Jenveys, but it did have weber DCOEs on it. They were too much for that little engine and the SUs just work. I was planning to just run fuel injection with a B20E motor and stock FI intake
