Turbobricks Discord chat server

A couple of thoughts regarding the discord, both from my time there and from being banned. To start with the good: there are some *extremely* knowledgeable, decent, friendly people in the server who have done and are doing amazing things with these cars. There is truly an excellent community there at times, willing to help when needed.
Agree. There is a reason people stick around.

Now...the bad. Sporadically enforced, poorly or simply *un*defined rules,
That is pretty much the point of the server. See #1 below.

excessive ****posting in every single channel,
I agree strongly, this is really annoying, but expected. See #2.

blatant antisemitism by at least one member....
See #3.

One member said it best when someone asked if there are server rules: "There are, but only when convenient for the mods".
I am not sure the meaning of this, it is rare that there is a need for a moderator to take action on anything. The server is pretty self-regulating with the regulars calling stuff out as they see fit.

I was banned for in jest pinging a moderator 5 times across two channels over the span of 2 hours, which apparently constitutes "repeated harassment" - of note is that at least one of these pings was a serious inquiry as to the price of an item, and another was a genuine request for moderation/clarification. There was not truly clear warning given, nor was a full reason given: in fact, as far as I was aware it was merely the normal joking interaction as is so common on that server.
You were both asked to stop pinging them AND kicked a couple of times before the ban. Yet you came back to do it again.

In contrast, other users have previously without repercussion: doxed admins (end result of that interaction for those curious: admin demoted from position, user allowed to stay after <1 day ban),
I am not sure exactly what happened specifically during that altercation, as the demoted person purged all the evidence, but you know that the two involved knew each other in person and constantly have beef for some reason.

In regards to the "demote," we have gotten DOZENS of complaints over a long period of time about the person. They have had an habit of harassing members and bringing other people to the server with the specific intent of harassing members and starting drama.

posted anti-semitic content,
3.) While I do agree it is deplorable, the member in question stopped and apologized for their behavior when called out.

posted actual pornography in general, etc, etc.
This is an interesting take, especially from you. :wtf:

If the intent is to have a server with no rules, then that goal has certainly been reached. I've said my piece, take it as you will.
1.) As stated, To have "no rules," WAS the original intent of the server. But if people really need "Do not harass people" or "stop means stop" to be spelled out on a bold and flashing sign, we can oblige. The rules that have been available on turbobricks for 20 years are a good start: https://forums.turbobricks.com/misc.php?do=showrules

i will say that my brief experiences in the TB discord have been irritating at best.

Yuh. Discord is the suk.
I'm old and discord feels like walking into an elementary school where they feed the kids crack.

Agreed, it's almost all cringey sh*tposting with the humor of a 15 year old.

2.) I will have to agree, but mostly in regards to the ****posting. It is extremely irritating when one asks a question and the choice ****posters just respond with nonsense, derailing the attemped discussion. It is a REALLY bad look when the asker is new to the group. Though, the forum is the better place for direct, on-topic discussion. c'est la vie. :e-shrug:

So the argument is both that there are no rules and that there are rules? Fair enough then, see again the quote about "only when convenient for the mods". To be blunt, the issue is less if there are or are not rules, but the fact that there seem to be very different standards depending on the user and time: more than one person messaged me afterwards noting their surprise as they had personally done worse without issue. As for being kicked beforehand....the moderator in question had previously kicked me as a joke more than once: it came across as, again, merely the normal level of joking inherent in the server. They have kicked others in jest as well in the past, as well as generally used moderator powers to goof around with users in various ways. I'm sorry I misinterpreted it, however the distinction between what was a joke and what was an actual moderator activity was not made clear. As I had previously said in DMs to the moderator in question, if razzing is too much just let me know to cut it out and I would - I'm aiming for gentle shop-talk level hard time similar to the rest of the server, absolutely not actual harassment. A simple DM of "Yo dude, knock it off" and I would have immediately stopped. As is, the actions were at best nebulous. Sorry to have misinterpreted.

As for this, perhaps you should ask the moderator in question about their repeated submissions to the photo contest in the other volvo discord, particularly concerning a certain pizza.... I may have made jokes aplenty, not denying that - but I tried to keep them within the realm of what seemed to be reasonably accepted within the server in terms of what is safe to post or not. What I posted fell *far* short of some content I regularly saw on the server, including from the moderators themselves. As for my activities elsewhere, that's a matter for other servers and other times and not relevant to current discussion.

3.) While I do agree it is deplorable, the member in question stopped and apologized for their behavior when called out.

Fair enough - I seem to have missed the part where they apologized. My bad on that.

First I've ever heard of this, when I asked you about why I got demoted you never replied, and our DMs remain barren to this day. I asked the other mod involved and I got given the runaround and never actually given anything other than "we thought you were an ass for various reasons" and "this was the push we needed for a coup". Not to mention this all went down with the only uninvolved moderator being completely unaware that there was an issue and only found out after I had been removed.

As for "bringing members in to harass people", I'd like to see any evidence that people who've joined and know me ever went on any actual harassment campaigns other than one guy who was banned by me personally for harassing people.

I am not sure exactly what happened specifically during that altercation, as the demoted person purged all the evidence, but you know that the two involved knew each other in person and constantly have beef for some reason.

There are many people in the server that saw what happened and have explained the whole situation. There was also the person in question admitting to it today. Is this strictly doxxing? Maybe not, but it's an actionable threat over the barely-serious suggestion of reporting their reckless driving to the proper authorities.

Moral of the story: I can't exactly address any complaints about me if I don't actually hear about them in the first place, and there is ample information available from many sources that explain what the whole doxxing incident was about.

I'm not sure where you come from, but when called out for using antisemitic language, implying that the people who are calling you out "love sucking the dicks off the couple of aftermarket companies that hold go fast bits in a captive monopoly" is not an apology.

I retract my previous comment and instead agree with this statement.

There's like three channels that are kind of Turbo Brick related, and the rest are memes and shitposts and ducks. I don't know WTF is going on in there. The titles of most of the channels are indecipherable.

Did you ask?

Mezzanine: general
Buy sell trade: users selling in the server
Craigslist shitposting: sharing stuff you find online.
Beef: off topic
Pog sockets: memes
Youcar are bethe carare: post your car
Dale's home zone: place for home projects.
Ducks are cool cats spool: post yer furry things.

You can't expect all content to be exclusively on topic to volvos. If you want a regularly active community, they need to be able to stick around when life doesn't revolve around Volvo.

Don't forget that the names will periodically change, gotta stay on your toes.

beef > everything else

The discord is bad-ass. There's like, 11 different people on at any given time with varying levels of schizophrenia which keeps the conversations fresh, even if it devolves into incoherent keyboard smashing. And there's a channel about ducks, which makes it automatically better than 87% of all other discords.

Don't even get me started.
The statement literally describes one singular user. Modmins already kicked/banned everyone that was a genuine nuisance or had sex with their car.

There is some good offhand info on there, but it's just a chat server. Lots of people join hoping for real time advice on easily google-able issues and seem to be surprised and disappointed when either not met well or trolled because they are 16 and don't even have a driver's license.

boomer much? geez. If you don't know wtf is going on, you're not paying attention and curiously enough, it doesn't revolve around you and your relative situational awareness or lack thereof.
