Cant seem to pinpoint the problem with my 245. Every few weeks it will just randomly refuse to start. Usually after driving it and turning it off then going back to try and restart it after a few minutes. Weird thing is if i let it sit for a day it will happily restart. Was thinking it was a fuel pump issue. replaced the fp relay. I also hear a high pitched whining noise that highway speeds that changes tones and varies directly with rpms. Any ides? This old girl has around 430k on her and we have a love hate relationship. CALL TO ORDER NOW!

I had the same problem on my 89 245, wound up replacing the starter & solenoid, ignition switch, the neutral saftey switch on the automatic trans, cleaned fuse box and replaced all fuses, and cleaned every electrical contact I could find under the hood. Finally got out the volt/ohm meter and started tracing down the starter curcuit, turns out the junction block on the firewall was bad allowing big voltage drop to the solenoid. The Bently Book has a very good section on this and walks you through the process.

I know this sounds like old hash, but have you checked the fuses? Removing, cleaning, replacing? I can't remember how many electrical gremlins are miraculously healed just by doing this.

For a long time Volvo claimed that fuses were the #1 cause of no start tow ins.
