Hey all, 1980 Volvo GT (2.1 B21 CIS)here.

I finally got the car back (yesterday) after having it in the mechanic's shop for 8 months. It finally Runs and drives, but i noticed something when I first started it up:

1) When the car starts up, the car idles like a bucking bronco -- a lot harder than I thought this four cylinder would do, considering it's a volvo and all. So I looked under the hood and saw the engine was shaking very hard. I revved the engine a little and it went away.

According to my mechanic, my mounts are good, but I need to refill it with some new premium gas. Is there any warrant to this advice?

2) The car starts up like a champ, but after 5-10 seconds I hear a loud screaming coming from underneath the car. It sounds like a fuel pump is going crazy under my car and I just replaced this with a brand new one last year. My mechanic said it's possible that the in tank pump is going out and I think I changed this too (I put in a new tank last year). What would cause it to sound like a screaming banshee?

Thanks!

The shaking is usually caused by uneven/inadequate fuel pressure during start up, and the noise is usually from a pump straining to work. At idle it's probably not from the pre-pump- though the hose at the pre-pump could be torn/damaged, or the fuel filter is clogged.
