850 WWD Transmission light questions

So, last night I hopped in the 850 (1996, N/A, Auto) and put the key in the "on" position to test a 12v air compressor. I left the key in the on position for about 30 seconds while I routed the compressor to the rear passenger side tire (through the interior and out the door)

When I went to start the car and run the compressor, I noticed the transmission/overdrive light was flashing. The "econ/sport" switch light was also flashing. I thought it might be some weird security crap so I didn't think anything of it right off the bat, but it stayed flashing once I started the car.

I filled the rear tires and packed the compressor up. Broke out the OBD-II scanner and turned the car off, then back to the on position. Oh, BTW, the check engine light came on with it as well (secondary air injection - go figure, right?) That's why I got the scan tool out.

Cleared the codes, fired it up, no check engine light and no transmission light flashing. Weird. (how does my OBD-II scanner clear the trans codes?!)

Fast forward to this morning - I parked at the office and just for ****s and grins I turned the car off, then back to the "on" position. I waited about 15/20 seconds and the light began to flash again. I fired the car up, and the check engine light was on again and the trans light continued to flash (along with the econ/sport switch light) Now keep in mind the check engine light has stayed off since I cleaned the relay contacts on the air injection pump and rapped it with the side of my fist a few times - until this transmission light stuff started.

If I just jump in the car and hit the key, wait for the fuel pump to finish priming and start it, the transmission light will never flash.. The check engine light stays off.. all is well in the world. I realize the air pump is probably not actually working, or is working slightly or something; I'm not concerned with the CEL regardless. I just want to know what the hell could be wrong with the transmission. It shifts slightly hard but I'm of the mindset that a hard shift is a good shift - doesn't bother me one bit.

So why would the trans light begin to flash only when the car is in the "on" position and hasn't been started? Could it be that the fluid is hot enough from heat soak to cause concern to the ECU? I'm going to get the car on level ground later this afternoon and check the trans fluid to make sure it's topped off. Beyond that, I have no idea what could be wrong. The thing works fine..

Any input?
